Fine vertical lines around the lips and mouth, often referred to as ‘barcode lines’ or ‘smokers lines,’ commonly develop due to repetitive movements like pouting, frequently associated with cigarette smoking.
Muscle-relaxing injections can help prevent the lips from being pulled together, which contributes to the formation of vertical lines. To treat these smokers lines, small injections with a fine needle are carefully administered to relax the muscles around the upper lip, helping to smooth and soften the appearance of the lines.
What Causes Smoker's Lines or Lip Wrinkles?
Smokers lines are fine, vertical lines that etch the lips and extend from the lips to below the nose, and are generally more prevalent on the upper lips.
Fine lines around the lips and mouth are often referred to as ‘smokers lines’, as they’re a common result of the repetitive pouting formation of the mouth caused by cigarette smoking, not to mention the ageing effects of smoking itself. Smoking breaks down collagen production in the skin, leading to thinning skin, deeper wrinkles, and prominent smokers lines.
But they can also be caused by any repetitive bunching of the tissues around the mouth from overactivity of the muscle surrounding the mouth, called the orbicularis oris.
